Hello to the first day of Summer, I’ve missed you! Sorry, not sorry to my friends and family in the Northern Hemisphere, hope I’m not making you jealous about the warm weather down under 😊 And since it’s the first day of Summer, the silly season can officially begin. I like having a date to mark the beginning of a celebratory event. This probably has something to do with my OCD tendencies, lol. Therefore, I believe today marks the official start of the holidays. Growing up in the States, Thanksgiving was the official start for me. Seriously, a massive meal followed by a good snooze, followed by a weekend of football and hanging out with friends and family is an excellent way to start the holidays. I’ll never forget my Friendsgiving weekends of too much wine and tailgating at Notre Dame football games. But now that I’m an Aussie, I have quickly to a warm holiday season. But as the weather warms up and the holiday season arrives, it has me thinking how can I bring more balance to my life.

This next statement will come as no surprise to anyone who has known me for longer than 5 minutes. I love wine! That includes drinking it, talking about it, blending it, cooking with it, touring vineyards and of course going to wine country. Yes, I’m a self-confessed wino. Breaking news I know. I’ve been wanting to write a post about my love of wine, but didn’t really know where to start. But then as I was thinking about what to write about this week, it suddenly hit me as I was thinking about the wildfires in Napa and Sonoma Valley. And it struck me how important this beautiful part of the country has influenced my life, so I want to reflect on how my love of wine was nurtured.

Yes, you read that correctly. No, my computer was not hacked by the Russians. I couldn’t resist that comment 😊 Anybody who has met me in the past 10 years or so is probably wondering how is this possible. I’m the person who gives you a dirty look when I see you eating excessive amounts of deserts or fast food. Sorry, well not really. I’m doing it for your own good, I swear! But seriously, I used to be addicted to sugar. I still have a sweet tooth, but I now find other ways to satisfy my cravings. Before I lose your attention on my current food fetish, first some proof of my former naughty food habits.

….and I’m not talking about the weather! I’m talking about the fire burning in my mouth from the chili. It’s that time of the year, chili season. I’m referring to a meal, not the spice. For all my American friends and family reading this, I’m sure you can relate and know what I’m talking about. As the weather starts to cool down and football season gets started, you are ready to dig into a piping hot bowl of chili. My Aussie friends may be thinking, why in the world am I blogging about chili when we are getting ready for warm weather and what is so special about this meal. Well, this post came to mind when I told my mom the other day that I was planning to write about food. And she instantly said to me, are you going to write about your dad’s chili? Because when one thinks of food in Kansas, this is what comes to mind!

Excellent! Now that I have your attention, I’ll let you know what this post is really about….hehe. But it does relate back to my creative title. This post is about relationships with both men and women. We all need friends, both male and female, for a good laugh. This past weekend, I had the joy of singing karaoke songs with friends. Well, joy for me, probably painful for my friends and whoever else was at the bar, as I certainly do not have a singing voice. Fortunately for everyone, I didn’t sing any solos, although I pretend to rap, that was interesting. My favourite part of the night was the dancing part of karaoke over the singing. But let’s admit it is fun to sing and dance to cheesy songs like ‘It’s Raining Me’ and all the Neil Diamond and ABBA songs you can think of.

RESILIENCE. What do you think of when you hear this word? This is a word that I have been thinking a lot about lately.
The word first came into my life as having a meaning a few years ago when I was going through a tough situation and someone said to me ‘You’ll be ok because you’re resilient’. Well, that might sound like a nice thing to say, but it really doesn’t resonate when you are feeling down and out.

This post is about a blast from the past, a city that is. Recently I visited Melbourne with some of my favourite Sydneysiders. We had a truly fabulous time enjoying all that Melbourne has to offer which included cute little cafes, fascinating walks and a dazzling musical. I’ll come back to the details, including my personal recommendations. First, I’d like to reflect on what a trip to Melbourne means for me. Visiting Melbourne always brings on a flood of memories and what ifs. I lived in Melbourne for a short 6 months after my arrival in Australia, before moving to Adelaide. I sometimes wonder what if I stayed, what would my life be like? Well, I sure wouldn’t have my amazing Sydney friends!
